COVID 19 has changed the way we go about our daily routines, from social distancing to no large gatherings. This pandemic has fundamentally changed the way we interact with our families, friends, and coworkers. Gone are the days of making last-minute plans to meet your bestie at your favourite Italian restaurant, or catching the game after work with coworkers at the local pub.
Just because the rule of engagement have changed, it doesn’t mean we need to stop socializing completely with friends and family. There are ways you can dine at your favourite restaurant or enjoy a drink at your local bar, and still be safe.
We are all in this together, the first precaution we all need to take when it comes to socializing at this time is, if you have any symptoms of COVID 19 or if you have been in contact with someone that has recently tested positive or is showing symptoms, stay home! Yes, we all are longing to see our friends and family, but it is not worth putting others at risk.
Try and keep your social bubble small. By this we do not mean limit the number of people you are going out with, this in most municipalities has already be made a law. Limit the number of people you are seeing and spending time with. Going out to lunch with a friend and then meeting 3 other friends for dinner on the same day, and then doing it all over again a day or two later with different friends opens you up to being a spreader of the COVID 19 virus. By limiting those you actually go out with and physically interact with, you are limiting the potential of spreading the virus.
When choosing your dining location, make sure the business is adhering to all of the safety protocols, such as maintaining a 6-foot distance between tables, all restaurant staff is wearing face masks, that all tables and chairs are being cleaned and disinfected after every use, that they have hand sanitizer stations for guests to utilize, and disposable or digital menus are being utilized.
When you are out at your favourite Italian restaurant or the local pub, you are still responsible for your own health. The restaurant or bar staff may be following all of the safety precautions and even cleaning beyond the regular expectations, but there is still some risk. When possible asked to be seated in a well-ventilated area, perhaps on an outdoor patio, choose to wear your mask at all times when you are not eating. Makes sure to always wear your mask when you are up from your table, and always hash or sanitize your hands after touching high traffic objects, such as doorknobs or railings.
When you are out in public, you will never be able to completely eliminate the risk of COVID 19. By following safety protocols and being aware of your environment and who is in your social bubble, you can drastically reduce the potential risks. And with the worry of the virus reduced, you can focus on your friends, family, and the great meal in front of you.
